THE AIRPORT STACK

One hub. Five outposts. One desert.

Airway Cubes catalogs nine Arizona airports plus three neighboring west-coast gateways. Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is the primary hub; Tucson, Mesa Gateway, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, and Bullhead/Laughlin are the five Arizona secondary airports. Las Vegas, Denver, and San Francisco round out the day-trip neighbors. Each card below covers service mix, who flies there, and what to know before you stack a cube.

PHX

Phoenix Sky Harbor International

Primary AZ hub

Sky Harbor is the 11th-busiest US airport by passenger count and the focal point of the Airway Cubes catalog. Three terminals (2 is closed, 3 and 4 are active) serve every category of US carrier. TSA wait at the busiest morning peak (5:30-7:30 AM MST) regularly exceeds 30 minutes.

TUS

Tucson International

Secondary AZ

TUS is a small airport two hours southeast of PHX. Frequency and fare ladders are thinner than at PHX. Best for travelers based in southern AZ; usually fares are $40-$120 higher than PHX on the same route.

AZA

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway

Secondary AZ

AZA is a leisure-focused airport east of Phoenix. The terminal is small, parking is cheap. Best for leisure travelers heading to small Midwest and Pacific Northwest markets on limited weekly schedules.

FLG

Flagstaff Pulliam

Northern AZ - regional

FLG sits at 7,000 feet elevation and is served by regional jets to PHX plus seasonal mainline service. It is the closest airport to Grand Canyon South Rim and Sedona. Winter weather cancellations are common; build a buffer day in either direction.

GCN

Grand Canyon National Park

Tourist - regional

GCN serves Tusayan, directly south of Grand Canyon South Rim. Scheduled service is limited to small-plane operators; most traffic is helicopter and small-plane tour flights. For the canyon, FLG or LAS plus ground transport is usually cheaper and faster.

IFP

Laughlin-Bullhead International

Far-western AZ

IFP sits on the AZ-NV border across the Colorado River from Laughlin's casino strip. Seasonal mainline service runs through the winter snowbird months. Ground transport into Laughlin is short and many hotels run airport shuttles.

LAS

Harry Reid International (Las Vegas)

Day-trip neighbor

LAS is one hour by air from PHX and the most heavily-competed market in the catalog. Day-trip travel is feasible: 7 AM out, 9 PM back.

DEN

Denver International

Mountain-West gateway

DEN is two hours by air from PHX and a major mountain-west connection point. Skiing markets (Aspen, Vail) connect via DEN on small regional jets.

SFO

San Francisco International

California gateway

SFO is the natural Pacific-coast connection point for PHX travelers. Fog delays at SFO are seasonal (May-July mornings); build buffer for tight connections.
