Arrive on time. Stack with margin.
When PHX TSA peaks, when to leave for the airport, and how much buffer to build for connections at the major hub airports.
PHX peak departure hours
Sky Harbor's busiest morning peak is 5:30-7:30 AM MST. Multiple operator banks push at the same time: a large eastbound transcon wave, a westbound point-to-point wave, and several connection-feed banks for the major US hub networks. TSA wait at the Terminal 4 north checkpoint can exceed 35 minutes during this window. Terminal 3 is generally faster, with peak waits of 20-25 minutes.
TSA wait projections by hour
- 4:30–5:30 AM: 10-15 minutes (early-bird travelers)
- 5:30–7:30 AM: 25-35 minutes (peak)
- 7:30–10:00 AM: 15-20 minutes
- 10:00 AM–2:00 PM: 10-15 minutes
- 2:00–5:00 PM: 15-25 minutes (afternoon push)
- 5:00–8:00 PM: 20-30 minutes (evening transcons)
- After 8:00 PM: under 10 minutes
TSA PreCheck cuts these times by about 60%. Terminal 4 has the longest PreCheck line; Terminal 3 PreCheck is rarely longer than 8 minutes.
Hub-arrival connection timing
For connections at hub airports, build at least 45 minutes for domestic-to-domestic and 90 minutes for domestic-to-international. Tightest reliable connections: DFW (35 minutes between Terminal D gates, longer if changing terminals), DEN (45 minutes between concourses), ATL (40 minutes Plane Train), SLC (35 minutes — small airport). Longest typical connections: ORD (75 minutes, gate spread is wide), EWR (60+ minutes Terminal C), JFK (90+ minutes between airlines).
Catalog desk rule of thumb
For a 7 AM PHX departure, leave home by 5:00 AM. For a 9 AM departure, leave by 7:00 AM. For a redeye (after 10 PM), leave by 8:30 PM. For any international connection, build at least one full overnight buffer.
